According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 8,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues every year. Unfortunately, almost all these fires can be prevented. Fortunately, with some simple precautions, your family can enjoy a safe grilling season.
Backyard Grilling Safety Tips to Avoid Fire Damage
Monitor and control the fire - Never leave the grill unattended. Avoid flare ups during cooking by keeping your grill clean, scraping the grates, and cleaning the trays to remove grease and fat buildup each time you use the grill. Keep a spray bottle of water handy in case of a small flare-up.
Position your grill in a safe place - choose a location for your grill that open and well ventilated, at least 10 ft away from structures including your home, deck railing, eaves, and low hanging branches.
Keep the grill out of a high-traffic area - Be sure to warn adults and children alike of a hot grill. The surface of a grill can heat up to dangerously high temperatures – certainly hot enough to cause serious burns. Keep kids and pets at least 3ft away from the grill, even a grill that's turned off and cooling down can cause serious burns.
Have a plan to put out a fire - Have the correct type of fire extinguisher within reach and, if you are using a gas grill, make sure you know where the emergency cut-off is before you start cooking. Keep matches, lighters, and combustible liquids out of reach and sight of children.

Often during a fire restoration, many recovery operations need to happen simultaneously, some of our crew will work on water extraction and demolition, while others will inventory and pack up items to move to another location to help prevent further property damage from exposure to contaminated areas. Smoke and soot particles are small and can get deep inside building materials, furniture, and other porous items. HEPA filters help our industrial strength air scrubbers and vacuums capture soot, purify the air, and neutralize odors. Our SERVPRO of Medford location is fortunate to offer restoration and rebuilding services following a property disaster from fire, water, or mold.
